Who can take PrEP?
PrEP is for sexually active adults and adolescents who do not have HIV and want to reduce their risk of HIV. It is not limited to any gender, sexual orientation, or relationship status.
How effective is PrEP?
When taken as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV. According to the CDC, it reduces the risk of acquiring HIV through sexual exposure by about 99% and through injection drug use by at least 74%. Taking your medication consistently and attending routine follow-up visits are important to maintaining that protection.
Does PrEP protect against other STIs?
PrEP protects against HIV, but it does not prevent other sexually transmitted infections. Regular STI screening remains an important part of your care. Depending on your needs, your provider may also discuss additional prevention options, such as doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (Doxy-PEP).
How soon does PrEP start working?
PrEP does not provide immediate protection. Depending on the type of exposure, it can take several days to a few weeks to reach its maximum effectiveness. Your provider will explain what to expect based on your individual circumstances.
Is PrEP safe?
PrEP medications are FDA-approved and have been used safely by millions of people. Most people tolerate PrEP well, and any side effects are typically mild and improve within the first few weeks. As part of your ongoing care, we’ll routinely monitor your kidney function and overall health.
Will I need follow up appointments?
Yes. Routine follow-up visits are an important part of PrEP care. These appointments typically include HIV testing, recommended lab work, medication refills, and an opportunity to discuss any questions or changes in your health.
Can I take PrEP if my partner has HIV?
PrEP can be an important part of an HIV prevention plan for people with a partner living with HIV. During your visit, we’ll discuss your situation and help determine the approach that’s most appropriate for you.
Is my appointment confidential?
Absolutely. Your visit and medical records are protected by federal and state privacy laws, and our team is committed to providing confidential, respectful care. If you’d like us to share information with a family member, partner, or another individual, you can do so by completing our Authorization for Release of Information form.
How much does PrEP cost?
Most insurance plans, including Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid), cover PrEP and the associated office visits and laboratory testing. If you have questions about your coverage or potential out-of-pocket costs, our team can help verify your benefits and discuss available financial assistance programs before you begin treatment.
What happens if I stop taking PrEP?
If you stop taking PrEP, your protection against HIV will decrease over time. If your circumstances change, we can help you determine whether restarting PrEP or considering another prevention strategy is right for you.
